Staplehurst is a village in Seward County, roughly ten minutes from Seward and half an hour from Lincoln, and it falls within the Lincoln metropolitan area. It was established in 1879 when the railroad was extended to that point. A family of early settlers being natives of Staplehurst, England, caused the name to be selected. The 2020 census recorded 236 residents, down slightly from 242 in 2010 and 270 in 2000.
Baseball is the thread running through the town. Staplehurst has fielded girls softball, Legion and semi professional teams over the years, and in 1984 the Nebraska Semi-Pro Baseball Committee named it the Nebraska Baseball Capital. Trophies from those seasons are kept in the community hall, and ball is still played through the summer.
This is farm country with a strong volunteer streak, including the fire department and the community hall. The men’s community club puts on an all you can eat liver and onions feed each Presidents Day that draws people from the surrounding area. Our Redeemer Lutheran School teaches kindergarten through eighth grade and takes families beyond its own congregation, and Cross Creek Animal Health Center, a mixed animal veterinary practice, opened in 2014. The actress Coleen Gray, born Doris Jensen, came from Staplehurst.
