Utica sits in Seward County, roughly halfway between Seward and York and about a mile from the county line. The village grew up around the railroad, and tall grain silos still stand beside the tracks. Its cemetery, laid out in 1879, is known for the Avenue of Flags that the American Legion raises each Memorial Day in honor of local service members who died in uniform.
Centennial Public School, a district created during the Nebraska centennial year, is based in Utica and draws students from a wide stretch of Seward and York counties, including Beaver Crossing, Waco and Gresham. St. Paul Lutheran School also operates in town. A medical clinic opened in 1955 with stockholder money and volunteer labor, and a family medical center still serves the village today.
Main Street carries a working mix of businesses — a bank, a market, a co-op elevator and feed mill, contractors, small manufacturers and a bookbindery. The state recertified Utica as a Leadership Certified Community in 2021 after five years of downtown facade work and improvements to streets, sidewalks, utilities and parks. Doug Bereuter, elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978, grew up here.
