History

Arthur was founded in 1913 to be the seat of the newly organized county, and county business was first done from a covered wagon. A general store opened in 1914, followed by a newspaper, a church, a post office (moved from Lena in 1914) and a one-room high school. The tiny frame courthouse, 26 by 28 feet, went up in 1914 and the jail in 1915; they served until a new courthouse was built in 1960–61. Congregationalists built the Pilgrim Holiness Church in 1928 with load-bearing walls of baled rye straw, and several houses in town were built the same way. The Arthur State Bank opened in 1916 and failed in 1932, electricity came in 1926, and the village incorporated in 1944; it counted 176 people in 1950. In March 2026 the Morrill Fire, the largest wildfire on record in Nebraska, burned into northern Arthur County; its one death was Rose White, 86, of Arthur County.
