Lemoyne was surveyed in 1911, named for landowner Lemoyne Jacobs, who arranged for the Union Pacific to build a rail line through his property around 1909. It grew into a proper small town with a school (1915), a church, and other businesses, reaching roughly 200 residents by the 1920s — but its most distinctive history is that the original townsite was dismantled and physically moved north in 1937 to make way for Kingsley Dam and Lake McConaughy; the old site now lies under roughly 50 feet of water and was briefly exposed during a severe 2004 drought, giving Lemoyne a minor claim to fame as an "underwater ghost town."

Lemoyne today is an unincorporated community and census-designated place, not a village or city, with a 2020 Census population of just 44 — a fraction of its 1920s peak. Its ZIP code is 69146. Bethany Presbyterian Church (1919) is the notable surviving landmark.
