Lewellen was platted in 1906 and named for Frank Lewellen, an early settler who arrived in 1886 and ran a store and post office out of his home. The village is home to Ash Hollow State Historical Park, a major landmark on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails and the site of the 1855 Battle of Ash Hollow (Battle of Blue Water Creek), one of the most historically significant sites in Garden County.
