About Millard
Millard is a neighborhood in southwest Omaha, about 10 miles west-southwest of downtown, that grew from the old town near Millard Ave. and L St. It was a town from 1871 until Omaha annexed it in 1971, and Millard Public Schools remain a separate district. Businesses here are listed under Omaha in the directory.
History
Ezra Millard laid out the town in 1871 (some sources say 1870), and the Union Pacific opened a station in December 1873, the year the post office began. Millard incorporated in 1885. In 1890 it was a German farm town of about 250 people with a flour mill.
After the Lane Cut-off opened in 1908, the old Union Pacific line through Millard became a secondary route; the track from Gilmore to Millard was removed between 1988 and 1994, and Millard customers are now served from Lane Junction. The post office closed in 1967, and Omaha annexed Millard in 1971 after lengthy legal fights. NE 50 begins at US 275 / NE 92 and 132nd St. in Millard.
