About Portal
Portal was a railroad village on Giles Rd. between 108th and 114th streets, just west of La Vista and northwest of Papillion. The town is gone, but its cemetery remains, and its schoolhouse is preserved in Papillion.
History
In 1890 the Missouri Pacific and Union Pacific crossed at Portal, and the Burlington crossed the north part of town. It had about 60 people and a German Methodist church, and a post office from 1887 to 1898. Repeated floods led to its abandonment about 1900. The Portal Cemetery was platted in 1879 on Andrew Fricke's land and has been run by the Portal Cemetery Association since 1962.
District 22 had a school here from 1871; the present one-room schoolhouse was built in 1890 and moved to higher ground in 1908. When it closed in May 1993 it was the last one-room school operating in Sarpy County. The Papillion Area Historical Society bought it for $1 and moved it to 230 N. Jefferson St. in Papillion in 1995. Portal Elementary in La Vista carries the name.
