About Ashton
Ashton is a village in Sherman County, in central Nebraska. The 2020 census counted 198 residents. The village covers about 0.59 square miles, all of it land. Loup City, the county seat, is a short drive away.
History
Ashton was incorporated as a village in 1889, soon after the railroad established a depot there. The post office opened the year before, in 1888. The name was chosen because an early settler was a native of Ashton, Illinois. The population was 237 at the 2000 census and 194 at the 2010 census.
Polish heritage
Ashton is one of the communities established through nineteenth-century efforts by the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America to found Polish colonies in the United States. Sherman County has one of the highest percentages of Polish Americans in the country. The Polish Heritage Center and Museum, on Howells Avenue in Ashton, keeps artifacts and genealogical records of the settlers and their descendants, and is open on Sunday afternoons.
