About Springfield

Springfield is a city of 1,501 in southern Sarpy County, on NE 50 about 7 miles southwest of Papillion and 6 miles north of the Platte River at Louisville. The Sarpy County Fair is held at the fairgrounds on Main Street each summer, and the MoPac Trail runs south to the Platte. It has Springfield Platteview Community Schools and the Springfield Memorial Library.

History

J. D. Spearman, a Civil War officer, settled in the area and in 1874 founded Sarpy Center, which won a county-seat vote in 1875 but lost the seat to Papillion. In 1873 he had bought land where he expected a railroad, and when the Missouri Pacific built through in 1881 the town was laid out on his land that fall; nine buildings moved over from Sarpy Center. The name comes from the springs in the area. Springfield had about 300 people by 1882 and 400 in 1890.

The Works Progress Administration built the sandstone Springfield Community Hall in 1938–40; it is on the National Register. The Missouri Pacific line became the MoPac Trail, which crosses the Platte to South Bend on the Lied Platte River Bridge. The population reached its peak of 1,529 in 2010.
