Gothenburg is a city in Dawson County, Nebraska, founded in 1882 by Swedish immigrant Olof Bergström and fellow town-builder J. H. MacColl. Bergström and German immigrant William Ehmen each recruited settlers from their respective home countries, giving the city its distinctive dual Swedish and German heritage. The name honors Gothenburg (Göteborg), Sweden — Gothenburg, Nebraska is one of only two cities in the world bearing the name — though local lore holds it received its Germanic-style spelling because the railroad asked a German-speaking resident how to spell it. The city preserves two original Pony Express stations: one was relocated to Ehmen Park in 1931 and now draws roughly 50,000 visitors a year, while the other, the Midway Stage Station, remains at its original site four miles south of town. A canal built in the 1880s and 90s once carried Platte River water toward a planned generating station at Lake Helen, an industrial ambition cut short by the Panic of 1893; a Carnegie Library followed in 1916 during a later boom. Notable native Ben Kuroki was the only Japanese-American to serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces' Pacific theater during World War II, a significant distinction given the era's internment of Japanese-Americans elsewhere in the country. With a population of 3,478 (2020 census), Gothenburg is reached via Interstate 80's Exit 211 and US Route 30.
