Midway Station was built in 1859 for the stage line of the Leavenworth City & Pike's Peak Express Company and enlarged in 1860 and 1861, when it served as a Pony Express station. Rider Jim Moore carried the mail west from here to Julesburg; on one ride he covered 280 miles in under 15 hours. In 1879 Henry Laurens Williams bought the property and made the building a cabin on his Lower 96 Ranch. It still stands on its original site and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.
Visiting: Midway Station is on private ranch land about 3 miles south of Gothenburg and is not open to the public. To see a Pony Express station building, visit the Pony Express Station in Ehmen Park in Gothenburg. The annual Pony Express Re-Ride passes Midway each June.
