About Geneva
Geneva is the county seat of Fillmore County in south-eastern Nebraska. It sits on U.S. Highway 81, about 24 miles south of Interstate 80, at the geographic centre of the county. The population was 2,136 at the 2020 census, down from 2,217 in 2010. The city covers about 2.28 square miles at an elevation near 1,637 feet. Students attend Fillmore Central Elementary and High School; Grace Lutheran Elementary also operates here.
History
Geneva was established in 1871 and became the county seat that same year. The name comes from Geneva in Switzerland, possibly by way of Geneva, New York.
The courthouse
The Fillmore County Courthouse stands at 900 G Street. It was built in the 1890s in a simplified Richardsonian Romanesque style, and its clock was added in 1909. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Inside are tin ceilings hung with portraits of former county officials and a second-floor courtroom. The tower clock still chimes.
A state record
On 15 July 1934 Geneva reached 118 degrees Fahrenheit, the highest temperature ever recorded in Nebraska. Minden and Hartington share the record.

Geneva is the seat of Fillmore County, originally platted in 1871 under the name "Henry" before quickly being renamed Geneva -- accounts differ on whether the name honors Geneva, New York, Geneva, Switzerland, or was suggested by a child who wanted it named for the family's former home of Geneva, Illinois. The town's centerpiece is the Fillmore County Courthouse, built in 1894 and topped with a three-story clock tower added in 1909; the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Geneva sits along U.S. Route 81, part of the Pan-American Highway. With a 2020 population of 2,136, it remains the county's largest community. Geneva has produced several notable figures, including 2020 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences winner Robert B. Wilson, Kate Barnard, the first woman elected to statewide office in Oklahoma, and Olympic javelin thrower Maggie Malone. Geneva also shares, with Minden and Hartington, the distinction of recording Nebraska's all-time high temperature of 118 degrees F, set July 15, 1934.
