About Milligan
Milligan is a village in Fillmore County, in south-eastern Nebraska. The 2020 census recorded 241 residents, down from 285 in 2010 and 315 in 2000. The village covers about 0.25 square miles at an elevation of roughly 1,600 feet. Exeter lies about ten miles north and Fairmont about thirteen miles north-west.
History
Milligan was laid out in 1887, when the Kansas City and Omaha Railroad was extended to that point. It was named for Frank Milligan, a railroad official. The post office opened the same year.
Czech heritage
The Cesko-narodni sin, or Milligan Auditorium, was built in 1929 as a meeting hall for the local Czech community. The name translates as Czech National Hall. It has hosted dances, Sokol events, films and Czech theatre, and a 2006 report noted that it remained in use as a community centre. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 29 February 1996.
Schools and people
Milligan students attend the Exeter-Milligan-Friend school district, consolidated in 2025 from the Exeter-Milligan district formed in 2002. The village was home to the baseball player Eddie Brown and the Nebraska legislator Jeanne Combs.
