About Benson
Benson is a neighborhood of Omaha, about 4 miles west-northwest of downtown, centered on Maple St. (NE 64) and Military Ave. It was a town of its own from 1887 until Omaha annexed it in 1917, and its old business district along Maple St. is a National Register historic district. Businesses here are listed under Omaha in the directory.
History
Erastus Benson bought 900 acres from John Creighton and platted the town as Benson Place by March 4, 1887. The Benson Motor Railway's streetcars ran to Omaha from 1887 to 1948. The post office opened in 1891, and Benson incorporated as a village in 1897.
Omaha annexed Benson in 1917; the post office had already become Benson Station in 1914. The Benson Commercial Historic District, Maple St. from 59th to 63rd streets with buildings dating from 1890 to 1954, is listed on the National Register. The railroad village of DeBolt was advertised in 1887 as 2 miles north of Benson.
