About Irvington

Irvington is a former village in Union Precinct, northern Douglas County, now mostly within northwest Omaha around N. 90th St. (NE 133) and Fremont St., about 7.5 miles northwest of downtown. It was never incorporated. Its ZIP code is 68122.

History

The settlement on Papillion Creek was first called Papio, and its post office opened in 1877. Settler Sardius C. Brewster, who organized a Congregational Sabbath school here in 1863, is credited with renaming it for his birthplace, Irvington, New York; Frank Hibbard is also named. Speculators had platted a town called Orient nearby in 1857, but it was never built. The Irvington Congregational Church was founded in 1866 by the Rev. Reuben Gaylord, and the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad built a depot in 1887.

In 1890 Irvington had about 250 people and two flour mills. The Irvington State Bank (1918–1931), 6612 N. 90th St., was robbed in 1924 and 1926. The volunteer fire department was founded in 1952. A 1950s vote to incorporate failed, the post office closed in 1965, and most of the area has since been annexed by Omaha.
