Berwyn is a small village in Custer County, Nebraska, laid out in 1886 by the Lincoln Town-Site Company when the Burlington, Missouri River & Wyoming Central Railroad reached the site — the first train arrived August 26, 1886, and a post office opened that November 9. The town is believed to take its name from a railroad surveyor named Berwyn. Situated along Nebraska Highway 2 on the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway, about 75 miles west of Grand Island, Berwyn remains one of Custer County's smallest incorporated communities, with a 2020 population of just 75 residents, down from 83 a decade earlier. Like many of the county's smaller railroad-era towns, Berwyn has continued to shrink through the twentieth and twenty-first centuries even as it retains its place along one of central Nebraska's scenic travel corridors.
