Sargent is an incorporated community in Custer County, Nebraska (listed as a city in some records, though its population falls within the range Nebraska law more typically classifies as a village), founded in 1883 and laid out by Ezra P. Savage, who would later become Nebraska's governor. The town's first store was built by J. K. Spacht in July 1883, and Sargent grew rapidly after the railroad finally arrived in 1899. Its post office was actually established four years earlier, in 1879, by postmaster Ruth Sherman (recorded in some sources as Mrs. George Sherman), who named the community for her friends Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Sargent of Streator, Illinois. Sargent sits along US Route 183 (known locally as Ord Street) on the Middle Loup River, near the geographic center of Nebraska. With a 2020 population of 500, it remains one of the more substantial towns in the county outside Broken Bow.
Sargent's post office was established in 1879, four years before the town itself was founded in 1883 by future Nebraska governor Ezra P. Savage. Along US Route 183 on the Middle Loup River near the state's geographic center, Sargent had 500 residents in 2020.
