The city lies approximately 15 miles northwest of West Point and shares the Wisner-Pilger School District with neighboring Pilger in Stanton County.

Founded in 1871 and incorporated in 1878, Wisner grew as German and Czech immigrant families settled the fertile farmland of the Cuming County interior. The community developed a strong agricultural identity centered on corn, soybeans, cattle, and hog production that remains central to the local economy today.

History

Wisner was named for George Wisner, a land promoter who helped establish the community. By the time of incorporation in 1878, the town had a general store, a post office, and a growing number of farm families on the surrounding prairie. The Chicago and North Western Railway reached Wisner in the early 1880s, cementing its role as a shipping point for grain and livestock from across northern Cuming County.

Wisner-Pilger Schools, formed through consolidation of the two towns' school districts, is a source of community pride and competes in Nebraska 8-Man Football. In June 2014, the nearby community of Pilger (15 miles west in Stanton County) was struck by a historic twin EF4 tornado event; Wisner served as a support community during the recovery.
