About Aloys

Aloys is an unincorporated community on NE 32 in southwestern Cuming County, about 10 miles west of West Point. It is the home of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 700 Hwy 32, and the St. Aloysius Cemetery.

History

Aloys grew up as an inland village around St. Aloysius parish; the name is the German form of Aloysius, the parish's patron saint. Its post office ran from 1895 to 1902. It is one of three rural Catholic communities in southwestern Cuming County, with St. Charles, where St. Anthony's was the county's first church in 1867, and Monterey, where St. Boniface was begun in 1881.

A 2000 state survey of historic buildings found the St. Aloysius church complex potentially eligible for the National Register. The parish shares its pastor with St. Mary's in West Point.
