West Point, Nebraska

West Point is the county seat of Cuming County, located in northeastern Nebraska along the US-275 corridor. With a population of approximately 3,541 (2020 census), it is the largest city in Cuming County and serves as the regional hub for commerce, healthcare, and education in the surrounding agricultural community. The city sits near the confluence of Deer Creek and the Elkhorn River watershed, surrounded by fertile farmland that has supported generations of German and Czech immigrant families.

Founded in 1857, West Point was platted and named after West Point, New York โ€” home of the United States Military Academy โ€” reflecting both the admiration settlers held for the institution and the aspirational spirit of the new frontier community. It became the county seat of Cuming County in 1858, just three years after the county itself was established.

Today West Point balances its agricultural roots with a strong network of community institutions. Bishop Neumann High School, a Catholic institution, draws students from across Cuming County and beyond. West Point's medical center provides essential healthcare services to the region. The annual Cuming County Fair draws visitors from surrounding counties each summer.

History

Cuming County was established in 1855 and named for Thomas B. Cuming, the first Secretary of Nebraska Territory who served twice as Acting Governor. West Point was platted in 1857 and designated the county seat in 1858. Early settlers were drawn by the promise of rich prairie soil along Deer Creek, and the town grew steadily through the 1860s and 1870s as homesteaders staked claims across the surrounding countryside.

The arrival of the Chicago and North Western Railway in the 1880s transformed West Point from a modest frontier settlement into a regional trade center. The railway brought new residents, new commerce, and new connections to markets in Omaha and beyond. German and Czech immigrant families โ€” many from Bohemia โ€” established farms, churches, and fraternal organizations that gave the community its distinctive cultural character.

The early twentieth century saw West Point mature as a community: brick storefronts replaced wooden buildings on the main street, the county courthouse was completed, and Catholic parishes including the Basilica of St. Francis Cabrini became anchors of community life. The agricultural economy weathered the Great Depression and the droughts of the 1930s, and returned to prosperity in the postwar era.

West Point's most famous neighboring attraction is the John G. Neihardt State Historic Site in nearby Bancroft โ€” the former home of Nebraska's poet laureate, John G. Neihardt, author of Black Elk Speaks. The site draws visitors from across the region interested in Native American history and the literary heritage of the Great Plains.
