Verdon is a village in Richardson County, in the far southeastern corner of Nebraska. John A. Hall and his wife Julia filed the town plat in February 1882. The railroad company suggested the name, which was most likely built from the word verdure. The 2020 census counted 164 residents.
Verdon State Recreation Area lies less than a mile west of town, with the Big Nemaha River in the same direction. The area is small and unfussy: about thirty acres of ground wrapped around a spring fed lake of forty-five acres, with twenty basic campsites in a shady campground, primitive restrooms, thirteen picnic tables and eighteen grills. There is no boat ramp or dock, and only electric motors and non powered boats are allowed on the water. Anglers come for largemouth bass, bluegill, white crappie and channel catfish, and the campsites are first come, first served.
The village had its own district, Dawson-Verdon Public Schools, until 2004; children now attend Falls City Public Schools. A small park at Fourth and Main and a handful of local businesses make up the rest of town.
