Holdrege, the seat of Phelps County, was founded in 1883 when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad extended its line to the site, with the first train arriving December 10, 1883 to a settlement of roughly 200 people. Incorporated on February 14, 1884, the town is named for George Ward Holdrege, the CB&Q's general manager who oversaw much of the railroad's Nebraska construction, and won a contested election that year to take the county seat from Phelps Center. Holdrege is home to the Phelps County Courthouse and the C.B.&Q. Holdrege Depot, both individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with the Nebraska Prairie Museum and The Tassel, an 818-seat performing arts center that opened in 1999. Lake Seldom Wildlife Refuge, described as Nebraska's largest municipally-owned wildlife refuge, sits within the city, and Amtrak's California Zephyr makes a regular stop here.
