Litchfield is a village in Sherman County in central Nebraska. The 2020 census counted 220 residents, down from 262 in 2010 and 280 in 2000. The village covers about 0.31 square miles at an elevation near 2,160 feet. Hazard is five miles south-east, and Loup City, the county seat, 12 miles north-east.
History
Litchfield was platted in 1886, when the railroad was extended to that point, and the post office opened the same year. Early settlers including John Kisling, Rebecca Powell and L. D. Engleman sold parcels to the railroad, and the Lincoln Townsite Company laid out the site. Business followed the tracks. In its stronger years the town supported a grist mill, a newspaper, a bank and a telephone office, among other concerns. Litchfield marked its centennial in 1986.

The village was most likely named for Litchfield, Connecticut, though the record is not firm on the point.
Before the town
Archaeologists have found early campsites in the area, the most recent of them Pawnee, evidence that people were using this ground long before the townsite was surveyed.
