About Osceola
Osceola is the county seat of Polk County, in eastern Nebraska. It covers about 0.92 square miles, and the 2020 census counted 875 residents. The city lies roughly 49 miles north-east of Grand Island, 76 miles north-west of Lincoln and 90 miles west of Omaha.
History
The first settlers, the families of Reverend James Query and Vinson Perry Davis, arrived in October 1868. The town was organized in the early autumn of 1871 by William Francis Kimmel and John Hopwood Mickey, and a post office was established that year. Davis named the place after Osceola, Iowa, which had been named for Chief Osceola of the Seminole people. The first courthouse, a modest frame building, was completed in March 1872. The Omaha and Republican Valley Railroad reached town in 1879. Osceola incorporated as a village on 26 August 1881, with 200 residents.
Fire and growth
A fire in 1895 destroyed all but two buildings in town. The drought years of 1893 to 1895 added to the hardship. The population reached its peak of about 1,200 in 1920.
People
Two Nebraska governors, Albinus Nance and John H. Mickey, came from Osceola.
Osceola is the county seat of Polk County, Nebraska, sitting near the geographic center of the county in east-central Nebraska. Founded in 1871 and incorporated as a village in 1881, the city serves as Polk County's civic and governmental hub, home to the Polk County Courthouse and the Polk County Historical Museum.
With a population of 875 at the 2020 Census, Osceola blends small-town charm with a notable political legacy — the city counts several Nebraska and Wyoming governors among its native sons and residents. Its historic downtown and courthouse square remain the center of Polk County life.
