Benedict is a village of 203 residents (2020 Census), reflecting a steady, gradual decline from 278 in 2000 typical of the county's smallest villages. It was platted in 1886 when the Kansas City and Omaha Railroad expanded into the area and formally incorporated in 1890, taking its name from E. C. Benedict, a railroad official — a naming pattern shared with several other York County villages, including Lushton and McCool Junction.
