Thayer is a village of 44 residents (2020 Census) in York County — not to be confused with Thayer County, a separate Nebraska county roughly 60 miles away whose seat is Hebron. Both places share a namesake: John Milton Thayer, a Union Army general during the Civil War who also served as a Reconstruction-era U.S. Senator from Nebraska. The village of Thayer was platted in 1887 when the railroad reached the site.
