About Cincinnati
Cincinnati was a town on the South Fork of the Nemaha River in southeastern Pawnee County, near the Kansas line about 2 miles south-southeast of Du Bois and 14 miles from Pawnee City. The Cincinnati Cemetery remains; the map point is the cemetery.
History
The county's first settlers located near the site, and Cincinnati was platted as early as 1857 in South Fork precinct. John Fries built the county's first water-powered grist mill here, and by 1882 the town had an iron bridge over the river, M. L. Harrington's hotel, a drug store, a blacksmith shop and a German Baptist society under Elder William Pullen; coal dug nearby was sold as "Cincinnati coal." The local school taught pupils from about 1868.
Cincinnati never got a railroad, and in 1882 it had no more than 75 people. When a Rock Island line built through in 1886, Du Bois grew up on the railroad 2 miles to the north-northwest. The Cincinnati Bridge over the South Fork was on the National Register from 1992 until 2015, and a Pioneer Cincinnati Cemetery monument was placed in May 2023.
