Bushnell was founded in 1867, during the Union Pacific Railroad's westward construction through the Nebraska panhandle, and named for Cornelius Scranton Bushnell, a Civil War-era financier known for backing development of the ironclad USS Monitor.

Bushnell is an incorporated village with a 2020 Census population of 110, down from 124 in 2010 — one of the smallest incorporated villages in Nebraska. Its ZIP code is 69128. The town hosts an annual Bushnell Day parade and festivities each August. Notable native Ken Sailors led the University of Wyoming to the 1943 NCAA basketball championship and is credited by some historians as an early popularizer of the jump shot.
