Kimball began around 1870 as a Union Pacific Railroad water stop and work camp originally called "Antelopeville," for the antelope common in the area. In 1885 it was renamed in honor of Thomas L. Kimball, Union Pacific's general manager, to resolve confusion with another Nebraska community also called Antelope. The town grew into a regional trading center, and when the surrounding area split off from Cheyenne County in 1888 to form a new county, it took the Kimball name as well; Kimball has been the county seat ever since.
