Virginia was platted in 1887 when the railroad reached the site, described historically as a "grain elevator village." It is named for Virginia Lewis, the daughter of a major regional pioneer landowner. At roughly 0.10 square miles, Virginia is one of the smallest incorporated villages in Gage County by footprint.
