George Winslow, 25, of Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts, was bound for the California goldfields with the Boston and Newton Joint Stock Association when he died of cholera here on June 8, 1849. His companions buried him beside the trail and carved a headstone. That original stone is now set into a granite monument dedicated in 1912. His grave is one of the best-known emigrant graves on the California Trail and Oregon Trail in Nebraska, and wagon ruts can be seen nearby.
Visiting: from U.S. 136 at Fairbury, go north on Highway 15 about 4 miles, then west on gravel 716 Road about 1.5 miles; the grave is north of the road in a pasture (directions vary slightly by source). It is on private land but open to visitors. Drive in if the gate is open; otherwise walk about a quarter mile, and close gates behind you because of livestock. Nearby: Rock Creek Station State Historical Park.
Information: Jefferson County Visitors Committee, 518 E St., Fairbury; 402-729-3000.
