Etna Nebraska

Etna is a former unincorporated community in Custer County, Nebraska's Wayne precinct, near the county's southwest corner. Known earlier as Etha, Etna's post office operated from 1885 to 1921, though its school survived until 1966 even as most other establishments — general store, post office, and the like — had closed by 1931. The origin of the name Etna is not confirmed; period sources describe it only as “probably of local selection.” Today Etna is marked by a 2017 Nebraska State Historical Society roadside marker, dedicated alongside a marker for the nearby Mitchell and Ketchum Homesteads, located about 19.5 miles south of Arnold near Highway 47 and Drive 780. The marker includes a roadside mailbox holding historical information and a guestbook for visitors. No population figures for Etna have survived, as the settlement no longer exists as an active community.
