History
Wood Lake was founded in 1882, when the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad, later the Chicago & North Western, was extended west. It was named for a lake on the west side of town with practically the only timber in the area. By 1890 it had about 200 people, a flour mill, three general stores, a hardware store and a harness maker. The population was 323 in both 1920 and 1940. The last train ran in 1992, and the Cowboy Trail now follows the grade. The Wood Lake school merged into Valentine Community Schools in 2006.
