Thatcher, Nebraska

Thatcher is a small populated place in Cherry County, Nebraska, in the Valentine Election Precinct just a few miles southeast of Valentine, the county seat. It's one of the older named locations in the county, honoring a post trader at nearby Fort Niobrara.

The Thatcher post office was established February 20, 1884, named in honor of J.M. Thatcher, post trader at Fort Niobrara. The office had a relatively brief run, closing on July 13, 1889, just over five years after it opened.

History

Thatcher's post office opened February 20, 1884, named for J.M. Thatcher, who served as post trader at Fort Niobrara -- the frontier army post built in 1880 along the Niobrara River following the Great Sioux War of 1876, to help oversee Chief Spotted Tail's Brule Lakota people at the nearby Rosebud Agency. The office closed July 13, 1889, one of the shorter-lived post offices among Cherry County's many small Sandhills communities.
