History

Hamilton County, Nebraska — created in 1867 and organized in 1870, named for Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury; the first permanent settlers arrived in 1866. County seat Aurora, laid out in 1871 by David Stone and named for Aurora, Illinois, where he had come from. The seat has a proper ghost-town story: it was transferred in 1876 from Orville City, a town that no longer exists. Population peaked at 14,096 in 1890 — the earliest peak in central Nebraska, after a decade in which the county grew by more than 70 percent — and today Hamilton is one of the few counties in the region that is growing again, at 9,429 in 2020 and about 9,700 now. 152 listings across 7 towns.

Getting there: Interstate 80 crosses the county, along with US-34, NE-2, NE-14 and NE-66. The interstate is almost certainly why the population is rising. Central Time.

For visitors: flat to gently rolling loess plain — the most uniformly agricultural country in central Nebraska — with the Platte River running northeast along the northwestern boundary, forming the line with Merrick County. Aurora has the Edgerton Explorit Center, a hands-on science center named for Harold Eugene Edgerton, the MIT engineer who invented the stroboscope and made high-speed photography possible — the bullet through the apple, the crown of a milk drop.

A note on that name, and on notable natives generally. Edgerton grew up in Aurora but was born at Fremont, in Dodge County. He is an Aurora son rather than an Aurora native, and the same turns out to be true of the whole list the town claims: the congressmen William Ledyard Stark (born Mystic, Connecticut), Silas Barton (New London, Iowa) and Eugene Hainer (Pécs, Hungary) all arrived as settlers, and the ballplayer Clarence Mitchell was born in a sod house in Franklin County and only moved to Aurora in 1943. No individual can currently be verified as born in Hamilton County — which takes nothing away from the people the town raised.
