Outdoors — Camping, RV, Hunting & Fishing

Arthur County has no state park, no state recreation area, no state wildlife management area and no confirmed public fishing water. With under three square miles of water in 718 square miles of dune country, that is the honest picture. What it has is emptiness, three remarkable buildings and some of the darkest sky in the lower 48.

Camping — one option, and it is boondocking. Arthur Village Park, 205 Fir St., Arthur. Free. Rigs park along the north, east and south edges of the park, parallel or perpendicular — there are no marked sites, no electrical hookups and no dump station. Potable water hydrants are in the park, restrooms are available, and there is free Wi-Fi from the library in the courthouse. No reservations. The longest rig reported is 20 feet — this is a small-town square, not an RV park, and big fifth-wheels and Class A coaches should plan elsewhere. Elevation about 3,641 feet. Single-sourced from camper reports; call the village before you rely on it.

The reason to stop is right there in the park. The Pilgrim Holiness Church — the “Baled Hay Church,” built 1928 — has load-bearing walls two feet thick of baled rye straw, plastered inside and stuccoed outside, one of the best-known surviving straw-bale buildings in America. National Register, 1979. Beside it, the First Arthur County Courthouse and Jail — courthouse 1914, jail 1915, 26 by 28 feet, long billed as perhaps the smallest courthouse in the United States, National Register 1990, now a museum. And the Mill Camp Log Cabin of 1877, an open-range line camp from the Frank North and Buffalo Bill Cody range that ran from the Dismal River down to the Platte, moved into town in 1977.

Fishing. No public fishing water is confirmed anywhere in Arthur County. Plan to fish elsewhere — Lake McConaughy in Keith County, about 40 miles south on Highway 61, is the realistic destination.

Hunting. No state wildlife management area is confirmed in Arthur County. Public access is essentially Open Fields and Waters walk-in tracts leased from private landowners — and because enrolled tracts change every year, last year’s Public Access Atlas is worthless. Get the current one. Principal game: sharp-tailed grouse (the Sandhills are their core Nebraska range), greater prairie-chicken, mule deer, white-tailed deer, pronghorn and coyote, plus waterfowl on the wet meadows and blowout lakes. Remember that camping is prohibited on OFW tracts — walk-in hunting, fishing and trapping only.

Dark skies. There is no formally designated dark-sky site in the county — Nebraska’s certified International Dark Sky Park is Merritt Reservoir over in Cherry County. But the sky over Arthur County is as dark as anything in the country, and with no town of more than 128 people anywhere in it, there is nothing to spoil it.

A common mix-up worth clearing up: Arthur Bowring Sandhills Ranch State Historical Park is not in Arthur County. It is at Merriman in Cherry County, named for the rancher and state senator Arthur Bowring. The shared name is coincidence.

Fire note. The Morrill Fire of March 2026 burned across this county on its way east — part of the largest wildfire in Nebraska history. Public-access ground, two-track roads, fences and cover may not be as the maps show them. Check the Nebraska Game and Parks Public Access Atlas and call ahead before you go.

Arthur County is one of the least densely populated counties in the United States, set entirely within the Nebraska Sandhills. The land is nearly all native grass rangeland supporting cattle ranching operations. Arthur, the county seat and only incorporated community, sits along NE-61 amid wetlands, grass-covered dunes, and sweeping open sky. The Arthur County Courthouse is one of the smallest in the nation.

The Morrill Fire. Between 12 and 25 March 2026 the Morrill Fire ran east out of Morrill County on high winds through Garden, Grant, Arthur and Keith counties, reaching 642,029 acres — the largest wildfire in Nebraska history. One person died and numerous structures were lost. A great deal of the rangeland in this county is a changed landscape. Anyone planning a hunt, a back-road drive or a stay out here should check the Nebraska Game and Parks Public Access Atlas and call ahead before setting out.
