About Monterey
Monterey is an unincorporated community in Monterey Township, southwestern Cuming County, about 6 miles west-southwest of West Point. It is the home of St. Boniface Catholic Church, 450 12th Rd., and the St. Boniface Cemetery.
History
Monterey was an inland village named, directly or indirectly, for the Battle of Monterrey in the Mexican–American War. Its post office ran from 1882 to 1905; an 1890 directory placed it in the southern part of the county, eight miles from West Point. Work on the St. Boniface church began in 1881, and the name still appeared on a 1912 county map.
The parish school has been torn down, but St. Boniface remains an active parish, one of three rural Catholic communities in southwestern Cuming County with St. Charles and Aloys.
