About Tamora
Tamora is an unincorporated community of 44 people (2020) in Seward County, half a mile south of US 34 about 7 miles west of Seward and 6 miles east of Utica, with a large United Farmers Cooperative elevator on the BNSF line.
History
After the Burlington built through in 1877, four men each gave 10 acres for a townsite in 1879; the name is said to come from a frontier pronunciation of “tomorrow,” because choosing a name kept being put off. Tamora incorporated in 1888 and at its height had more than 30 businesses, two banks and the Tamora Times; an 1892 bid for the county seat failed. Many business buildings burned and were never rebuilt, the post office closed in 1970, and residents voted 30–6 to disincorporate in 1997. The Tamora Waterfowl Production Area lies at the southeast edge.
