About Gilmore

Gilmore was a Union Pacific station, post office and shipping point at what is now 25th St. and Gilmore Rd. in south Bellevue, just west of US 75. It was named for a railroad official.

History

The Union Pacific's first main line, begun in Omaha on July 10, 1865, ran south up Mud Creek to Papillion Creek, curved west near Gilmore and went on through Papillion to Millard. Gilmore had a post office from 1869 to 1908 and a depot from 1885 to 1947. In 1890 it had 31 people and the Anchor Mill, which made flour. On March 11, 1903, the Overland Limited and a freight train collided head-on nearby, killing six.

When the Lane Cut-off opened in 1908, the old line became a branch, and the town faded; the post office closed that year. The 7.3 miles of track from Gilmore to Millard were removed between 1988 and 1994, but the "Gilmore Junction" name survives on the railroad. Gilmore Lake later became a fishing and skating spot; its tavern became the Avery Tavern of VFW Post 10727. Part of the old roadbed is now the West Papio Trail.
