About Grainton
Grainton is an unincorporated community on the NKC railroad in far eastern Perkins County, about 6 miles east-southeast of Elsie and 6½ miles west of Wallace. Its mail comes through Wallace (ZIP 69169).
History
Grainton grew up as a grain-shipping point on the Burlington line, and its post office operated from 1918 to 1981. It once had a high school, whose annuals are kept at the Perkins County Museum, and a Methodist church. On November 17, 2022, Scoular opened an upgraded shuttle-loading elevator here, with 6 million bushels of storage in twin 140-foot concrete tanks and track for 110-car trains; it can receive 45,000 bushels an hour while loading 60,000. Residents of the surrounding farms still give Grainton as their home.
