At O'Fallon's Bluff, a line of bluffs along the south bank of the South Platte came down to the river and squeezed wagons onto a narrow, sandy path. The ruts they cut are among the clearest left on the Oregon Trail in Nebraska, and at the Interstate 80 rest area east of Sutherland they are marked by iron hoops shaped like wagon wheels. A stage and Pony Express station stood nearby in 1860 and 1861. The Donner Party passed in June 1846. The site has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974.
Visiting: the ruts, a walking path and the state historical marker "The Great Platte River Road" are at the eastbound rest area near mile 159, open whenever the rest area is open. There is no fee.
