About Macy
Macy is a community in Thurston County, in north-eastern Nebraska, within the Omaha Reservation. It is the seat of government of the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska, a federally recognised nation. Tribal offices are at 497 Main Street, and the Alfred Gilpin Tribal Administration Building stands in Macy. The community is served by Umonhon Nation Public Schools. The 2020 census counted 1,045 residents.
The name
The post office here was first named Omaha Agency, because it served the agency of the Omaha. To keep mail from being confused with mail for the city of Omaha, the name was shortened by joining the ma of Omaha to the cy of agency. A post office under the name Macy was established in 1906.
The reservation
The Omaha Reservation lies mainly in Thurston County, with portions in Cuming and Burt counties in Nebraska and Monona County in Iowa. It covers roughly 310 square miles. The reservation population at the 2020 census was 4,526.
He'dewachi
The Omaha Tribe holds its annual He'dewachi celebration and powwow at Macy. The 221st annual gathering was held from 21 to 24 August 2025. Tribal Chairman Jason Sheridan said the event is open to the public with no admission charge, and that it includes drum and dance contests, native foods, and participants from other tribal nations.
