About Byron

Byron is a village in Thayer County, in south-eastern Nebraska. Its south edge is the Nebraska-Kansas state line. The 2020 census counted 85 residents, close to the 83 counted in 2010 but well down from 144 in 2000. The village covers 0.15 square miles, all land. Farming sets the pace here, with corn, soybeans, milo and alfalfa grown on both dryland and irrigated ground.

History

The town was first called Harbine and was platted in 1877, once it was certain the B and M Railroad would be extended to that point. In 1889 the name was changed to Byron, because another Nebraska post office already carried the name Harbine. The 1925 reference Nebraska Place Names says the new name honoured the English poet George Noel Gordon, Lord Byron. The Harbine name did not disappear: the community just across the state line in Kansas carries it today.

With just 85 residents in 2020 (down sharply from 144 in 2000) and a notably aging population, Byron is among Thayer County's smallest villages, distinguished mainly by its border-town history and its unusual naming saga.
