About Nemaha

Nemaha is a village of 114 in southeastern Nemaha County, on NE 67 about 4 miles south-southwest of Brownville and 8 miles northwest of Indian Cave State Park. Cooper Nuclear Station is between Nemaha and Brownville.

History

Settlers came to the site in 1854. A. L. Coate surveyed the town site and built the first cabin, and Dr. Jerome Hoover bought the claim that October, recorded the town and in 1857 became its first mayor. The legislature incorporated Nemaha City in 1855–56, and the post office opened on July 1, 1856. St. John's Episcopal Church was consecrated in 1866, and newspapers came and went from 1858. The Burlington reached the town in December 1879, and in 1881 it shipped 259 carloads of corn and 116 of hogs.

When the railroad chose Nemaha, the river town of Aspinwall to the southeast faded, and some of its buildings were moved here. Nemaha City became a village under state law in 1880. It counted 400 people in 1900. Lunsford E. Oliver, who commanded the 5th Armored Division in World War II, was from Nemaha.
