History

Homesteaders arrived in 1864, and in the mid-1860s August Lambrecht built a grist mill on Rock Creek, then the only one north of Omaha. The railroad's water stop here was called Rock Creek. A. D. Beemer, George Canfield and K. C. Morehouse platted the town as Rock Creek in 1885, and in 1886 the post office opened as Beemer and the village incorporated. Allen D. Beemer was a Civil War cavalry veteran, Cuming County sheriff from 1880 to 1884 and later warden of the state penitentiary; he started the Beemer Times in 1886.

Churches followed: Methodist in 1886, St. John's Lutheran in 1893 and Holy Cross Catholic in 1914. The 1918 school building served until 2008. The depot closed in 1963, rail service ended in 1982 and the tracks came out in 1985. The population peaked at 853 in 1980. Major league pitcher and manager Mel Harder and cartoonist Karl Hubenthal were born in Beemer.
