Yutan is a city in Saunders County in eastern Nebraska, with 1,347 residents at the 2020 census. It was first platted as Clear Creek in 1876, when the Omaha and Republican Valley Railroad was extended to the site, and it sits along Upper Clear Creek in Union Township. The town was renamed in 1884 for an Oto chief.
The name reaches back further than the railroad. An Oto village stood in this area and was the first Indian settlement that fur trappers and military expeditions saw as they travelled up the Platte valley toward the Rocky Mountains. In 1833 the site hosted a treaty gathering of the Oto, the Pawnee and the Delaware. The Oto left the location in 1835, about two decades before the reservation period began for the tribe.
Yutan today runs its own district, Yutan Public Schools, with both an elementary school and a high school inside the city limits. City offices are on Vine Street, and the council handles the usual municipal work of permits, utilities, parks and recreation.
