About Prague
Prague is a village in Saunders County, in eastern Nebraska. The 2020 census recorded 291 residents, down from 303 in 2010 and 346 in 2000. The village covers about 0.31 square miles. Czechland Lake Recreation Area, a public park, lies about a mile north-west. The name is pronounced locally to rhyme with Craig, unlike the Czech capital it is named for.
History
Prague was platted in 1887, when the railroad was extended to that point through country that had been largely unsettled. A majority of the early residents were natives of Bohemia, and that is the reason the name was chosen, after Prague, the Bohemian capital and now the capital of the Czech Republic. The Czech background of the founding families remains the thread that most descriptions of the village return to.
The kolach claim
Prague is commonly described as the home of the world's largest kolach, a Czech pastry. The claim is carried on signage along Nebraska Highway 79 and is repeated in outside accounts of the village. The sources consulted record the claim and the marker itself, but do not document the pastry's dimensions or any certification of the record by an outside body.
