About Malmo
Malmo is a village in Saunders County, in eastern Nebraska. It covers about 0.14 square miles and stands at roughly 1,250 feet above sea level. The population was 94 at the 2020 census, down from 120 in 2010 and 109 in 2000. Wahoo lies about six miles south-east and Weston about five miles south. Cedar Bluffs is about ten miles north-east, Mead about twelve miles east, and Fremont about sixteen miles north-east. The village uses ZIP code 68040.
History
Malmo was platted in 1887, when the railroad reached the site, and its post office opened the same year. The village was incorporated in 1893. Swedish settlers predominated among the early residents, and they gave the town its name. The 1925 survey Nebraska Place Names puts it plainly: the Swedish residents named the town after the city and county of Malmo in Sweden.
