Ringgold traces to a small store that opened around 1900, expanded by Louis Stienbeck into a general store; residents petitioned for a post office, which was established in the mid-1900s and served the area until it closed in 1967. Settlers who had previously lived in an earlier, now-extinct Ringgold in Dawson County named the new McPherson County settlement after their former hometown.

Ringgold is an unincorporated, largely defunct rural community with no current population figure and no incorporation history. Its post office — the only one in McPherson County with a rural mail route, established in 1920 — closed in 1967, and the area is now served by Tryon's ZIP code, 69167. It sits about 9 miles east of Tryon and today survives mainly as the name of a longstanding McPherson County voting precinct.
