About Pickrell
Pickrell is a village in Gage County, Nebraska. The 2020 census recorded 186 residents, down from 199 in 2010; the 2000 count was 182. The village covers 0.11 square miles.
History
Pickrell was laid out in 1884, when the railroad was extended to the point, and it was incorporated as a village in 1913. The Gage County Historical Society records that the settlement began a little to the east of the present site under the name Austin, where two early settlers, John Pickrell and Edward Austin, operated a mill, and that the town was moved onto higher ground in 1884. Accounts of the name differ in one detail: some state the village was named for William Pickrell, one of the original owners of the town site, while the historical society credits John Pickrell. Both agree the name comes from a Pickrell who was among the first settlers there.
Population
Pickrell has stayed small throughout its history. At the 2010 census the average household size was 2.37 people. The count then fell to 186 by 2020.
